Youth Outdoor Activities
Go out with family members and take a nature walk, explore trails, but avoid popular spots and peak times. Always maintain a distance of at least 6 feet from others wherever you go. Do NOT use playground equipment, public restrooms, and water fountains. Wash your hands before and after you go outside and avoid touching your face.
Spidey Sense
Have your child turn on their spidey-senses: touch, sight, smell, hearing, taste, that the superhero Spiderman would use to keep tabs on the world around him.
- This allows them to pause and focus on the present
- Encourages observation and curiosity
- Can be done with or without the superhero aspect, and with any age group
Safari
Tell your kids that you will be going on a safari: their goal is to notice as many birds, bugs, creepy-crawlies, and any other animals as they can. Anything that walks, crawls, swims, or flies is of interested, and they’ll need to focus all of their senses to find them, especially the little ones (Karen Young, 2017).
Rock Stacking
Get yourself and your kiddos to a other location with plenty of different sizes and shapes of rocks and them let them go wild trying to stack and balance them in different ways. Before leaving, the rock structures should be dismantled because of the ‘Leave No Trace’ outdoor ethics. A picture can be taken of their creations before taking them down.
